By now, it’s clear that I will recycle things for multiple purposes, and I am absolutely going to collect each year of this project into a stand-alone book, with some added content to make sure it’s worth putting on a shelf and using as a reference guide. We’ve already got 300 pages or so just from the newsletters I’ve published since we started, and sometimes I get a little overwhelmed by the size of the project.

The only way to do it is to think of it in smaller bites. I’ve never had to break a weekend in half before, but there were over ten films on the first weekend of October 1980, a really weird log-jam of different genres and styles.

So let’s keep going with that same weekend, starting with one of the weirdest gimmick flicks of the entire decade…

When you first see Robert Sacchi in the lead role in this film, the easy assumption is that they created the film specifically for him. It’s such a specific idea. A guy has plastic surgery to look exactly like Humphrey Bogart and then becomes a private detective. And the movie just happens to star a guy who looks pretty much exactly like Humphrey Bogart.
