Three tiny titles make an April 1981 three-fer
This one's for all the BLOODY BIRTHDAY, RIVALS, and BEYOND THE REEF fans out there
I know it hasn’t seemed like it lately, but this newsletter and the larger ongoing project it is part of is one of my favorite things.
Especially now that I am not actively working as a film critic, I’m enjoying the difference between writing about movies that are 40 years old and movies that are brand-new, and it’s not just because of the politics involved. In 1981, it was still a busy film industry, with a wide variety of things being released, and I miss a media landscape that looks like this. I’m gearing back up to do the fully-packed edition of this thing, a month of movies in each newsletter, but for now, I’m doing this special three-fer. All three of these are very tiny films, and I’m not sure any one of them is enough of a newsletter by itself.
This is one of the things about this project that I find so interesting but that used to drive Scott crazy on ‘80s All Over. There are films that barely exist, left no real cultural footprint, and are not easy to find, but if I’m going to try to make this a genuinely complete review of the decade, that includes movies as small as this batch.
